  6.   Frank Lloyd Wright is rated a very original, great and
  7. influential architect indeed, although personally impulsive and
  8. improvident. Last week certain of his Chicago friends decided
  9. that they could at least overcome his improvidence. They made
  10. him become an institution with a charter. Frank Lloyd Wright,
  11. Inc. has issued $50,000 worth of preferred stock. He himself is
  12. no stockholder.

  14.   Architect Wright was born in 1869 on a Wisconsin farm where
  15. he spent his precocious childhood tending sheep. With no formal
  16. education he informally studied engineering at the University
  17. of Wisconsin. Although he received no degree he became unusually
  18. proficient in that profession. Twenty years ago his reputation
  19. in architecture was worldwide.

  21.   The basic philosophies of his buildings are: 1) They,
  22. especially homes, should be constructed as integral parts of
  23. their landscapes and of the materials of the neighborhood. His
  24. thrice-built home at Spring Green seemed a rocky outcropping of
  25. the hill itself. 2) Buildings (factories, theaters, hotels)
  26. should interpret the spirit as well as suit the use of their
  27. occupancies. This has created blocky, mechanistic, "modernistic"
  28. structures. His most representative factory building is that of
  29. the Larkin Co. at Buffalo; his best hotel the Imperial at Tokyo,
  30. famed for octagonal copper bathtubs and "skyscraper"
  31. furniture. People for whom he builds homes yield to his artistic
  32. bullying. His commissions--and therefrom the profits on which
  33. Frank Lloyd Wright, Inc. can count--enable him to maintain
  34. offices at Chicago, Los Angeles, Tokyo.
